How to Rank in Google AI Overviews: A Step-by-Step Guide for U.S. Businesses
· BlueHat Marketing
Picture a homeowner in Columbus, Ohio typing “is a heat pump worth it in Ohio” into Google on a cold February night. Before any blue link loads, a paragraph at the top of the page lays out the trade-offs and links to two local HVAC companies as its sources. Neither company paid for that spot.
Google reported in July 2025 that AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month. BlueHat Marketing has ranked pages on Google since 2005, and this guide covers how to rank in AI Overviews using what Google has published about its own system, with the steps in the order our team works through them.
What Google AI Overviews Pull From
Every AI Overview starts from pages Google has already crawled and indexed. Google’s documentation sets the bar plainly. To appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
Google also says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews and no special optimizations necessary. It adds that no special schema.org structured data is needed, which settles a common debate in AI Overview optimization.
Snippet controls can block a quote
Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the controls that limit what a page shows in Search. A page carrying one of them can sit in the index and still be unavailable for an Overview to quote, so they are the first thing to check.
How to Rank in AI Overviews, Step by Step
The steps below start with eligibility and end with a record you can check every month.
- Confirm the page can be quoted. Run the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to confirm the page is indexed, then check its source for a noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet tag on the passage you want cited.
- Search your own buying questions. Type the questions your customers ask into Google and note which pages each AI Overview cites. Those pages are the ones competing with yours for the citation.
- Answer under a question-shaped heading. Give each key question its own heading, phrased the way people search, and put a direct answer of two to four sentences right below it before any background.
- Add details only your business can give. Local conditions and timelines from real jobs give the page substance a generic article lacks, and Google’s guidance on helpful content asks for original information of exactly this kind.
- Strengthen the page for the search itself. Internal links from related pages and a title that matches the query help the page rank, and Google applies the same foundational SEO practices to AI features as to Search overall.
- Recheck the same questions monthly. Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside overall search totals, so a simple log of which pages each Overview cites is the clearest record of progress. Search on the same day each month from the same device, since results can differ between mobile and desktop.
Step two deserves the most time. The pages an Overview already cites show the depth and format Google is pulling for that question, and they set the bar your page has to clear.
Pages already on the first page for a question are the natural place to start. They have cleared Google’s ranking bar once, so tightening the answer and checking the snippet settings is a small job on a page with a head start.
What a quotable answer looks like
A worked example makes step three easier to picture. Here is the heat pump question from the opening, written in a shape an Overview can lift.
Is a heat pump worth it in Ohio?
For many Ohio homes a heat pump lowers the cost of heating and cooling, and cold-climate models are built for the state’s winter lows. The savings depend on the home’s insulation and on local electricity prices against natural gas. An installer can estimate both in one visit.
The heading repeats the question in the searcher’s own words, and the first sentence answers it before any detail. The next two sentences name the factors that move the answer for a specific home, the kind of specific detail a generic article skips.
AI Overviews SEO and the Clicks That Follow
Ranking first still counts, though an Overview above the results changes what first place is worth.
Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords in December 2025 and found the top organic result earns 58 percent fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears above it, compared with a 2023 baseline. A citation inside the Overview puts your page in front of the reader before the list of links even starts.
The visitors who do click tend to arrive further along. Semrush estimates a visitor from AI search is worth 4.4 times a visitor from classic organic search, since the reader has usually done the comparing before landing on the page.
